Sustainable sourcing means acquiring materials in a way that minimises environmental impact and respects local ecosystems and communities. 
For ICH, this involves using materials that are renewable, locally available, and ethically harvested. It's about moving from a "take" to a "regenerate" mindset.

It move us away from a linear "take-make-dispose" model and towards a regenerative, circular economy.

Sustainable sourcing is directly linked to sustainable tourism. When tourists visit a community to experience its ICH, they often seek authentic, locally sourced crafts.

By promoting sustainable sourcing, we not only protect the environment but also enhance the authenticity and value of the tourism experience, providing a direct economic benefit to the local community.
In the context of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) related to performing arts, such as traditional theatre or dance, sustainable sourcing includes costumes, props, and set elements. 
A theatre troupe producing traditional folk plays can obtain natural fabrics for costumes from local organic farms or use reclaimed wood for set construction instead of purchasing new, industrially produced materials. This approach also involves collaborating with local artisans to create specific accessories, ensuring fair wages and helping to preserve local craft traditions that support the performances.

  • For instance, bamboo, cork, and certain fast-growing fibers are more sustainable options compared to materials from old-growth forests or rare sources.

In many ICH traditions, natural dyes are sourced from plants. A sustainable approach involves using plants that grow abundantly, or even cultivating them in a way that improves soil health. In the Scottish Highlands, weavers are reviving the use of local plants such as heather and bracken to create dyes, thereby reducing their reliance on synthetic, petrochemical-based alternatives. This practice also enhances the connection to the landscape, which is an essential aspect of place-based tourism.

The principle of the circular economy is key here. In this model, every material is a potential resource for the next cycle. A potter can reuse clay scraps, and a weaver can integrate recycled textiles. This approach dramatically reduces waste and exemplifies a profound respect for materials. 

This focus on ethical and sustainable sourcing is a critical step in ensuring that our cultural heritage thrives in harmony with nature.

Green Technology refers to the application of environmental science to conserve the natural environment and resources, curbing the negative impacts of human involvement. 

In ICH, this includes methods like using low-energy monitoring systems, digital preservation tools, and passive climate control.

Traditionally, ICH conservation has often relied on methods that can be invasive, toxic, or energy-intensive. However, the modern field of heritage preservation is embracing green technologies that offer a more gentle and environmentally friendly approach. 


These innovations include 

  • the use of natural, reversible adhesives, 
  • biodegradable cleaning agents, 
  • and non-toxic pest control methods, which protect both the artefacts and the conservators who work with them.

Furthermore, a critical aspect of low-impact conservation involves preventive conservation. This approach focuses on creating stable environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, light) to slow down degradation, reducing the need for active, potentially invasive, interventions.

This is achieved through careful monitoring, using natural ventilation where possible, and employing passive climate control systems rather than solely relying on high-energy HVAC systems. 

When interventions are necessary, the principle of "minimum intervention" guides decisions, ensuring that any treatment is the least invasive possible and fully documented for future reference. 

This holistic approach safeguards the heritage while championing ecological responsibility.

Digital technologies are essential tools in green conservation, providing sustainable methods for preserving intangible cultural heritage (ICH).
 

  • Digital twins—accurate virtual models of physical objects—minimise the need for direct handling, protecting fragile artefacts.
  • By shifting research and public engagement online, we reduce the carbon footprint linked to physical access and storage.
  • High-resolution 3D scanning and advanced modelling capture intricate details, ensuring that the essence of objects is documented without risking their integrity. 

These digital assets enhance global access to heritage and enable the virtual reconstruction of damaged artefacts, offering insights that are impossible through physical manipulation alone.

Case Study: Preserving the ICH of the Maspalomas Dunes, Gran CanariaClick to read  

The Maspalomas Dunes are a significant natural heritage site, but they also hold ICH in the form of traditions and rituals associated with the local community. The challenge is preserving the landscape while allowing for tourism, which contributes to erosion and environmental stress.

Sustainable Intervention:    
  Virtual Heritage Tours: To reduce physical visitors' impact on sensitive areas, a digital replica of the dunes and their associated ICH has been created. A VR tour allows tourists to "walk" through the landscape and learn about the traditions, providing an immersive experience with zero physical impact.
Geospatial Monitoring: Using drone technology and GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping, authorities can monitor the dunes' erosion patterns and the impact of visitor foot traffic. This data helps in planning and enforcing conservation areas, guiding tourists on designated paths, and protecting the fragile ecosystem without relying on permanent, intrusive physical barriers.   Smart Eco-lighting: Along the visitor paths, solar-powered LED lights are used. These lights are equipped with motion sensors, only activating when a person is present. This reduces light pollution, conserves energy, and minimizes disturbance to the nocturnal wildlife, demonstrating how technology can support both conservation and tourism.

  • Encouraging visitors to utilise public transportation, cycling, or other low-carbon methods to reach the exhibition site is also a crucial part of fostering sustainable visitor behaviour, extending the green ethos beyond the museum walls.

When an exhibition actively demonstrates its commitment to sustainability, it acts as a powerful educational tool, encouraging a mindset of responsible consumption and environmental stewardship among its audience.

Case Study: The Brussels Museums "Green Museums" InitiativeClick to read  

The Brussels Museums Council, representing over 100 museums in the Brussels-Capital Region, has launched a significant initiative aimed at transforming its institutions into "Green Museums." This program encourages museums to adopt a sustainable approach across all their operations, including exhibition design.

Rather than focusing on a single "green" exhibition, the initiative provides a comprehensive framework for museums to reduce their ecological footprint. 
For instance, museums are encouraged to rethink their use of materials for temporary exhibitions by prioritising reusable, recycled, or locally sourced components.
The program also emphasises reducing energy consumption through efficient lighting (e.g., LED technology), managing waste effectively, and promoting sustainable visitor transport. The goal is to embed sustainability into the core identity of these cultural institutions, making eco-friendly exhibition design a standard practice rather than an exception. 

This collective effort not only contributes to environmental protection but also enhances the public image of Brussels' museums as pioneers in cultural sustainability, fostering a broader sense of environmental responsibility among both staff and visitors.
